Van Gaal revisits 1995 Ajax masterplan on his 75th birthday

Louis van Gaal celebrated his 75th birthday on Saturday by blowing out 75 candles and, in a symbolic gesture, stepped back into the mindset of Ajax’s 1995 teaching master. The former coach used the occasion at the Johan Cruijff Arena to re‑examine the European masterplan that led to his club’s Champions League win.

Van Gaal said he spent the two days before the event poring over his old notes and match footage, preparing extensively for the special gathering. He reviewed the original tactical sheets and video clips, ensuring every detail of his historic Ajax period was fresh in his mind.

When he took the podium for the first set of slides, his characteristic passion resurfaced. He illustrated Ajax’s playing style with hand gestures, movements across the hall and occasional raised voice, emphasizing the continuity of his teaching methods. "These are truths as a cow and I still stand behind them," he declared.

The centerpiece of the presentation was the Champions League final against AC Milan on 24 May 1995 in Vienna. Van Gaal recounted the exact preparation routine he employed for that decisive match, recalling the atmosphere and stakes of the European showdown.

He walked the audience through the starting eleven, analysed Milan’s strengths and outlined Ajax’s tactical plan to counter the Italian side. Even three decades later, he described his own methodology as sharp and unchanged.

During the session Van Gaal noticed the preparation materials were out of sequence and intervened, commenting, "The sheets you sent me for preparation were in the wrong order." His attention to detail highlighted his enduring commitment to precise planning.

Answering a question on whether he would alter any aspect of the final’s preparation, Van Gaal gave his typical response: "No, because in my opinion we have won." His recollection covered everything from field spacing to transition play and the role of his midfielders, showing that no element of the Ajax period had escaped his memory.
