Van der Vaart hails Estavana Polman as Eredivisie-ready talent
Rafael van der Vaart expressed pride in his wife Estavana Polman during her book launch, saying she could instantly become one of the best players in the Women’s Eredivisie. The former Dutch international spoke to Shownieuws, highlighting both her character and her potential on the pitch.
At the presentation of Polman’s new book, van der Vaart praised her as a person and as a mother, noting the depth of his admiration beyond sport. He described the moment on camera as a heartfelt tribute to his partner’s many qualities.
Van der Vaart admitted that Polman’s appearance initially attracted him, saying, “When I look at her, I think: wow, what a beautiful woman. It’s superficial, but that’s why I fell for her.” He added that this impression still makes him feel he made the right choice.
He emphasized that her role within the family matters most, commenting on how she interacts with his son Damián. Van der Vaart called her approach “out of this world” and suggested that his former partner Sylvie would agree with his assessment.
Describing the bond between Polman and Damián, van der Vaart said, “Sylvie and Estavana are extremes of each other, but that makes it fun. The most important thing is that my son looks at his step‑mother with pride.”
Reflecting on their first meeting while he was living in Seville, the ex‑Ajax, Tottenham and Real Madrid player recalled the nervousness of introducing a new partner to his child. He recalled telling his son, “She is a really nice woman.”
Polman quickly won Damián over, impressing him not only as a mother but also as a footballer. Van der Vaart noted, “She is incredible, also in terms of football. If she played in the Women’s Eredivisie, she would be one of the better ones.”
He also highlighted her technical skill, stating, “She can keep the ball up amazingly; it’s bizarre. Damián thought instantly: this is the ideal woman.”
During the event Polman presented her own book, which looks back on her handball career, personal life and the journey she has taken as a top athlete.
