Van Bommel admits Belgium needs time to match France
The Belgian coach Mark van Bommel, after the Nations League match between France and Belgium on Monday, admitted that his team still needs time to be on par with sides like France, who beat them 4-1.
Recognition of the French level
During the match, Van Bommel greeted Zinedine Zidane and noted that, although Belgium was up to par for much of the game, the French quality was decisive by bringing in three players of high level.
The Belgian coach highlighted that his team controlled the game at times and managed to score a good goal, in addition to creating chances and maintaining a solid low block.
Future outlook and Euro goal
Van Bommel stated that, despite the loss, Belgium has made positive steps and that the two weeks of training have been productive, although he lamented what happened in the last quarter hour.
Belgium must win to stay clear of Nations League relegation
The coach emphasized that the current competition is not an end in itself, but an opportunity to grow with the eye on the Euro that will be held in two years.
“We are satisfied with what we have done, we did not suffer a major defeat and we believe we have played well,” Van Bommel said, who also assured that the team remains intent on qualifying.
In his words, “it is only a matter of time before we can beat big teams; in two years the Euro arrives and we will have to be up to the task to beat them.”
