Valencia blocks Icardi for €5 million, Betis still in race for striker
Mauro Icardi, 33‑year‑old Argentine striker, has been a free agent since June 30 after his spell at Galatasaray and is now at the centre of interest from two Liga clubs: Valencia, which has halted negotiations over a €5 million demand, and Betis, which are assessing him as a replacement for the injured Cucho Hernández.
The Mestalla club was the first to inquire about the former Inter player's situation, but the deal collapsed quickly for financial reasons. Spanish media report that Icardi asked for five million euros, a sum deemed too high by Valencia.
According to the leak, it was reported:
Someone called Mauro Icardi to see if he wanted to join Valencia and the Argentine asked for €5 million. At that point the possibilities ran out.
That answer closed the transfer prospects with Valencia.
A different situation concerns Betis, which are evaluating the centre‑forward's profile to cover the absence of Cucho Hernández, sidelined with a muscle injury. Manuel Pellegrini's side, also competing in the Champions League, need offensive alternatives, as currently Troy Parrott is the only genuine target man available.
During his spell at Galatasaray, Icardi scored 77 goals in 134 appearances. Those numbers still make him an attractive option for clubs seeking experience up front.
Icardi has been free since June 30 and his future remains tied to financial demands. Several clubs have been monitoring the situation, but so far none have reached an agreement with the Argentine striker.
The contrast between Valencia's rejection of the asking price and Betis's interest, driven by an urgent need, highlights how financial conditions can dictate a player's opportunities. For Icardi, the next move will depend on who can meet his financial demands.
