United under fire as Carrick faces five replacement names

Manchester United's interim manager Michael Carrick will remain in charge for the Premier League clash with Bournemouth on Sunday, scheduled for 11:00 Brasília time at Camp Nou, as the club sits 13th with seven points.

United’s precarious league position

The Red Devils occupy only the 13th spot in the Premier League, having amassed seven points from the opening fixtures. Their recent 4‑1 loss to Como in the Champions League marked the club’s heaviest European defeat since 1994. The result has amplified scrutiny of Carrick’s tenure.

List of five potential successors

Board members have compiled a shortlist of five possible replacements. Julian Nagelsmann, currently free on the market, is viewed as a strong candidate. Antonio Conte, with Premier League experience, is also available for an immediate appointment. Eddie Howe, another free manager, fits the club’s preference for an English‑faced coach.

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler appears on the list but would require a substantial compensation payment, and he has reportedly shown little interest in moving now. Kieran McKenna provides a British alternative, completing the quintet of names under consideration.

Internal debate and external interest

Within United’s hierarchy, Christopher Vivell favours Nagelsmann while Jason Wilcox leans toward a manager with Premier League pedigree. The club’s executives, including Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, must decide amid tight preparation time for the upcoming game.

Separate reports indicate United are already in talks with a “hardline” successor. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is employing artificial intelligence to assess candidates such as Conte, Howe, Nagelsmann and Unai Emery. La Repubblica says talks with Conte have opened, with the Italian demanding full transfer‑market control and the right to appoint his own staff.

Conte, currently out of work, auditioned for the role during the last international break and is described by The Athletic as a hard‑line figure whose arrival could shock the Old Trafford board. Meanwhile, Fabian Hürzeler has ruled himself out of the running, according to a separate source.

Despite the shortlist, Carrick’s short‑term stay is justified only by the limited time to prepare for Bournemouth and ongoing internal divisions. With just two wins in the first eleven league games and no victory in the last seven matches, the manager’s future could be decided in the coming weeks if results do not improve.
