United spend up to £8m on Tottenham’s winger Tynan Thompson

Manchester United have signed 18‑year‑old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial £4 million, with performance‑related add‑ons that could raise the fee to £8 million, pending registration. The 18‑year‑old, a product of Tottenham’s academy, seeks regular senior football.

The agreement includes a 15‑20 % sell‑on clause and a matching‑rights condition that could enable Thompson to return to Tottenham if the club meets the terms.

Thompson impressed in the UEFA Youth League last season, netting seven goals, and he featured regularly on the left wing for Tottenham’s under‑21 side, establishing himself as a highly‑rated prospect.

At 18, he grew frustrated by limited first‑team opportunities at Tottenham, despite being named on the bench three times during the 2025‑26 campaign, and personal family circumstances, including a desire to relocate to the Manchester area after his father’s death last November, also influenced his decision.

Manchester United issued a statement saying, “Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.” The club highlighted his potential to strengthen their attacking options.

The move gives United a promising left‑wing talent to develop within their senior squad, while Tottenham retains financial upside and the possibility of re‑signing the player under the matching clause. Both clubs stand to benefit as Thompson seeks regular senior football.
