Union face Hapoel Beer Sheva behind closed doors in Düsseldorf

Union face Hapoel Beer Sheva behind closed doors in Düsseldorf

In the empty Merkur Spiel‑Arena, where normally up to 54,000 spectators can be seated, Union is preparing its third Europa League duel against Hapoel Beer Sheva, but the match will – to the disappointment of the fans – be played behind closed doors on Friday in Düsseldorf.

Union normally played its European home matches this season in Leuven, but mayor Mohamed Ridouani (Vooruit) refused permission for the duel with the Israeli club Hapoel Beer Sheva. Therefore the club and its board looked for an alternative venue close to Brussels.

Reason for the relocation

The solution was found in Germany: the match will be held in the Merkur Spiel‑Arena of third‑division side Fortuna Düsseldorf. The venue can accommodate more than 54,000 supporters, but for safety reasons the match will take place behind closed doors.

Responses and refunds

"After it became clear that we could not play in Leuven, our preference naturally shifted to a venue close to Brussels, with the possibility of welcoming our supporters. Unfortunately, the latter proved impossible for safety reasons," said Union. The club emphasized that the safety of supporters and players is the highest priority.

"Ultimately, Düsseldorf provided a venue where the travel distance for our players and staff remains limited and the impact on them is therefore as minimal as possible. We are very grateful to the city of Düsseldorf and Fortuna Düsseldorf for the hospitality," said Union. Union thanks the city of Düsseldorf and Fortuna Düsseldorf for the hospitality and the swift organization.

Fans with a mini‑subscription for the League Phase of the Europa League will receive a partial refund in the form of a voucher. The sports overview lists, among others, Football, Tennis, Formula 1 and a programme featuring the Jupiler Pro League, Challenger Pro League, Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. More information will follow in the official article.

The decision underscores the growing safety concerns surrounding matches against Israeli clubs and shows how European competitions must flexibly adapt to local restrictions. For Union, this means additional logistical challenges, but also an opportunity to strengthen the bond with German supporters.
