Uncertainty fades as Ireland confirm Israel clash in Debrecen

The Republic of Ireland have finally confirmed that Sunday’s UEFA Nations League B3 encounter with Israel in Debrecen, Hungary will go ahead, after a delayed pre‑match press conference and a players’ vote that had cleared the lingering doubts among the squad and staff.

Saturday doubts over the fixture

On Saturday morning there was real doubt whether the game would take place. A pre‑match news conference with manager Heimir Hallgrimsson and a player was postponed just fifteen minutes before it was due to start, with reporters told it would be held after the team’s training session.

The scheduled training session also passed without action, as the squad remained in their hotel and journalists moved there in anticipation of a statement. Players were locked in a meeting, and unconfirmed reports suggested several, including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, wanted to withdraw, raising further questions about the fixture.

Later, players began to filter out of the meeting room and the news conference was confirmed for 14:30 at Nagyerdei Stadion, with training to follow.

More than five hours after the original press conference time, Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell, flanked by Hallgrimsson and the FAI Director of Football, announced that a players’ vote had passed by a significant majority, clearing the way for the match.

The confirmation means the UEFA Nations League B3 clash will proceed as scheduled on Sunday, ending a day of uncertainty for both teams.
