UEFA’s boycott fuels Infantino crisis as World Cup hangs in balance

By 4AllFootball ·

On Thursday UEFA reiterated its firm boycott of all future FIFA tournaments, while President Gianni Infantino clung to his role despite mounting pressure, underscoring a stark clash between the European body’s unwavering stance and the president’s attempts to preserve the World Cup’s commercial plans.

UEFA confirmed that its boycott of future FIFA tournaments remains in force, delivering a fresh blow to President Gianni Infantino. The federation described the announcement as a bombshell dropped on Infantino and reiterated that its stance is unchanged.

Infantino was forced to withdraw plans to sell off future FIFA tournaments to private investors after a furious backlash from football federations. The vast majority of federations condemned the proposals, which aimed to involve private capital in the World Cup and other major events.

UEFA issued what it called its strongest rebuttal, insisting that its member nations would boycott the next World Cup if the sale plans were not abandoned. The federation warned that participation would be withdrawn unless the proposals were scrapped.

The confederation also reaffirmed that European nations will not take part in FIFA’s events if the conditions following the scandal are not met. This statement came after it emerged that Infantino retained the ‘full sport’ of FIFA’s board on Wednesday night.

In a Thursday afternoon statement, UEFA listed two conditions: the proposals to sell major competitions must be withdrawn, and assurances are required that such attempts to disfigure the game will never be made again. The federation noted that these conditions have not been met.

UEFA further declared that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency, a position it says remains unchanged. The governing body emphasized that confidence cannot be restored without concrete action.

The statement referenced Wednesday’s announcement that some staff employed by the FIFA President, whose careers depend on his favour, have voiced support for him. UEFA noted that this does not alter its stance.

The stark contrast between UEFA’s unyielding boycott and Infantino’s faltering proposals deepens the governance crisis ahead of the World Cup. Further updates are promised as the situation develops in the sport.
