U21 chases victory, Tresoldi follows Littbarski's trail in the qualification final
In the floodlights of the Allianz‑Arena, the German U21 is waiting to play the final qualifying match against Georgia on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
Qualification is at stake
A win secures the ticket for the European Championship tournament next summer in Albania and Serbia. Coach Antonio Di Salvo emphasizes that the team only needs to win one more game to guarantee participation.
Germany tops Group F with 24 points, closely followed by Greece, which plays in Northern Ireland on the same day. In case of a tie on points, the head‑to‑head record decides, with Germany ahead after a 2‑3 loss and a 2‑0 win against the Greeks.
However, Di Salvo has to do without centre‑back Noahkai Banks, as FC Augsburg reported an outer‑band injury to his right knee.
Tresoldi chases record and captain's armband
Striker Nicolò Tresoldi, 22, scored a hat‑trick in the 4:1 victory over Malta, giving him the chance to reach Pierre Littbarski's record of 18 goals. “Now we only have one game left to win,” Tresoldi said after the Malta success.
He explained that he still needs two more goals to match the record, and hopes to score them on Tuesday. Another goal would see him follow in Littbarski's footsteps and rewrite German U21 history.
Former international Pierre Littbarski praised the young striker: “The boy has truly earned it, and now he must also claim the crown.”
National team coach Jürgen Klopp wants to bind Tresoldi to the DFB in the long term, but the dual citizen (German‑Italian) will decide after the tournament which country he wants to represent in the future.
In the Malta match, Tresoldi was appointed captain for the first time; against Georgia he will wear the armband again.
