Two-year contract in Greece caps De Vrij's Inter era

Defender Stefan de Vrij has committed to a two‑year contract with Greek club Panathinaikos, after Internazionale confirmed his departure following eight seasons in Milan. The 34‑year‑old joins the Athens side as a free agent, ending a spell that began in 2018.

Internazionale officially announced the Dutch defender's exit on Tuesday, confirming that his contract will not be extended. After eight years in Milan, De Vrij will leave the club as a free agent.

De Vrij arrived in Milan in 2018 when Internazionale signed him from Lazio. The 34‑year‑old centre‑back joined on a free transfer from Rome.

During his time at Inter, he collected three Serie A crowns and an equal number of Coppa Italia trophies. He also amassed 296 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

De Vrij missed the Netherlands' World Cup squad because of lingering groin problems. The injuries kept him out of the tournament despite his experience.

Inter's farewell statement praised his reliability, noting, “Wij plaatsten ons vertrouwen in Stefan. We zagen hem als verantwoordelijke voor het opbouwen van onze defensie.” The club highlighted his composure, ball‑play and aerial ability.

Panathinaikos presented De Vrij as their newest signing via social media on Thursday. The defender is expected to provide the needed routine in the Greek side's back line.
