Tuchel and his lament: Only one goal saved them from Wembley disaster

At Wembley Stadium, the England national team fell 2-3 to Spain in its debut in the Nations League, a night in which Thomas Tuchel had to console Harry Kane after seeing how his side lost the lead and the point.

The start was catastrophic: two minutes in, Lamine Yamal received a pass from Marc Guéhi and, after a serious defensive error, beat goalkeeper James Trafford to open the scoring. “We had a terrible start, the worst possible; being behind on the scoreline against a team like that makes everything much more complicated,” Tuchel explained.

Disastrous start and Yamal goal

After the 0-1, England reacted and managed to equalise, but the German coach highlighted that “we made a grave error in the 2-2 goal and the third was the only one they really built; the others came from important individual mistakes.” The third goal, scored by Spain, was, according to Tuchel, the only one the opponents really constructed.

Positive aspects and lessons

“The reaction was very good; although we made serious errors and gave away clear chances, overall we were better and dominated. We scored two goals and lived our best 15 minutes after the break, but we could not convert the penalty,” the coach said. The penalty, taken by Harry Kane, smashed against the crossbar, leaving the captain “crestfallen.”

Tuchel also highlighted ball recovery: “we recovered between 12 and 15 balls more than Spain in the opponent’s half.” He added that, despite those recoveries, “we did not manage to turn enough of them into chances and goals; had we done so, we would have won the match.”

Amid the frustration, the German praised the goal of Anthony Gordon, describing it as “a first‑level transition” and highlighted the bravery and courage shown by his players. “The effort was there and there were phases of the match that were truly very good,” he concluded.

After the defeat, Tuchel looked to the future: England will travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic in its second meeting of Group 3 of League A. “We must keep the positive and recover the points against the Czech Republic,” he said, emphasizing the need to learn from the mistakes.

Tuchel’s analysis, collected by Jordi Archs in the International Football section, shows that, although England displayed flashes of quality, the decisive details and individual errors continue to make the difference at Nations League level.
