Tuchel says England will need a decade to replace Kane
As Harry Kane edges within striking distance of a century of goals for the Three Lions, England manager Thomas Tuchel cautions that finding a like‑for‑like successor will be a long‑term challenge. Speaking ahead of the UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia, he stressed the unique blend of finishing, link‑up play and leadership that makes Kane irreplaceable.
Tuchel explained that searching for a direct copy of Kane would be a waste of time. He noted it could take up to a decade to discover a forward with the same elite finishing, deep‑lying link‑up work and relentless leadership. “He is the first one to push everyone and that is his mindset,” Tuchel said, adding that the striker is “a very, very hardworking forward on top of his finishing skills.”
Alternative tactics emerging
In recent matches Tuchel has already experimented with alternative setups, deploying Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham further up the pitch as a makeshift number nine. He praised Bellingham’s natural goalscoring instincts and hunger, noting that the England side finished a game with Bellingham leading the line.

Kane, the Bayern Munich star, recently notched his 87th international goal in a 2‑0 victory over Czechia. That tally leaves him just 13 goals shy of an unprecedented century for the Three Lions.
Tuchel added that while another player will eventually emerge, it will not be a copy of Harry Kane. He suggested the search could span another ten years, and that finding a solution may even fall to his successor.

The juxtaposition of Kane’s looming milestone and the manager’s long‑term replacement dilemma underscores the challenge England faces: to evolve tactically while preserving the goal‑scoring firepower that has defined the team for years.
