Torreense's epic draws international media attention

On Thursday, Torreense beat Lillestrom 2-1, securing its first victory in European competitions by opening the first matchday of the Europa League group stage. The result, achieved at the Club Stadium, marked the Segunda Liga side’s victorious debut in continental competition.

International media focus on Torreense

The Torres Vedras emblem project has attracted the attention of the international press, as the Segunda Liga club rarely appears on the European stage. Several foreign outlets highlighted the feat, underscoring the historic significance of the achievement for a team outside the top division.

The Athletic dedicated a piece to Torreense’s achievement, recalling that Luís Tralhão’s club won the last edition of the Portuguese Cup: “Torreense is one of two Portuguese clubs competing in the Europa League this season. But, unlike Benfica, they do not play in Portugal’s top division. The Liga Portugal 2 club qualified for this year’s competition after winning the Portuguese Cup last season. And they started with a win, beating Lillestrom 2-1.”

Torreense secured its Europa League spot by triumphing in last season’s Portuguese Cup, under the guidance of Luís Tralhão. This triumph ensured the Liga Portugal 2 side’s entry into the continental competition, despite not being part of the national top division.

Alongside Benfica, Torreense is one of two Portuguese representatives in the Europa League, but unlike its rival, it does not compete in the Primeira Liga. The presence of the Segunda Liga club reinforces the diversity of Portuguese teams in the tournament.
