Thomas Tuchel expresses sympathy while Sterling awaits a penalty
While the English national team just suffered a 0‑7 defeat to Croatia in the Nations League, Raheem Sterling faces a possible prison sentence for a serious traffic accident under the influence of laughing gas. Both events cast a shadow over English football.
England’s draconian defeat
Thomas Tuchel, head coach of the English national team, responded immediately after the 0‑7 defeat to Croatia. He emphasized that the team must work hard to regain confidence. The defeat came in the Nations League, a competition in which England normally performs strongly.
Sterling’s crash and lawsuit
Raheem Sterling, who played for Feyenoord last season, lost control of his Lamborghini on the highway in May. Police stopped him when he hit the guardrail and found six cartridges of laughing gas in his vehicle. Sterling refused to provide a sample and later admitted in court that he had the substance with him.
The judge has not yet handed down a sentence; Sterling must still await a final verdict. He is currently without a club and was mentioned again in the news on Tuesday because of the events surrounding his arrest.
Tuchel’s personal sympathy
In an interview Tuchel expressed a great deal of sympathy for Sterling and described the situation as “sad”. He said that Sterling has had a difficult time since his departure from Manchester City, where he was at the peak of his career. Thomas had worked hard for Sterling’s transfer to Chelsea, but acknowledged that the impact never materialised.
Tuchel added that Sterling is a devoted father and family man, and that he hopes the footballer can break the downward spiral. He wishes Sterling all the best and believes he can still turn the tide.
