Tension around Israel‑Ireland duel in Nations League

Just before the start of the Nations League, the meetings between Israel and Ireland are under high tension, with matches scheduled for September 27 and October 4. Already on Monday evening Irish supporters called for a boycott, while the Israeli federation published a strong statement.

Both countries are playing this Nations League in the B‑division. When announcing the Irish squad, head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson spoke about the two meetings with Israel and declared: “We do not play with genocide, we play against genocide. We play against Israel, we do not play with Israel.”

On Monday evening Irish supporters gathered at the players’ hotel in Castleknock and called for a boycott. More than 160 Irish elite athletes signed an open letter in which they want to boycott the two matches.

Israeli response to Irish accusations

The Israeli federation answered the accusations with its own statement. “We have contributed to the world and humanity in countless areas, and have amassed an impressive number of Nobel Prizes in the process. Unfortunately we have not yet found a remedy for the stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy that the Irish head coach displays. We do not play with ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity, we play against the head coach who embodies these traits.”

The controversy underscores the tense atmosphere surrounding the upcoming Nations League‑duels. With the boycott actions and the sharp exchanges, it remains unclear whether the matches in September and October will take place unimpeded.
