Surprise appointment: Xavi Hernandez takes charge of Pays-Bas

In a surprise move announced Wednesday evening, Xavi Hernandez has been appointed head coach of the Pays-Bas national team, signing a contract that runs to 2030. He replaces Ronald Koeman after the Dutch side’s disappointing Coupe du monde exit, where they fell to Morocco on penalties.

A historic appointment

The Equipe Pays Bas will be led by its first non‑Dutch manager since 1978, ending a decades‑long tradition of home‑grown coaches. Xavi Hernandez succeeds Ronald Koeman, who was dismissed after the team’s underwhelming performance at the recent Coupe du monde.

The Spanish tactician signed a deal that keeps him in charge until 2030, providing long‑term stability for the national side. He last held a coaching role at FC Barcelona, which ended in 2024, making this his first appointment as a national team manager.

Upcoming challenges

Xavi’s first test will come in the Nations League, with the Pays‑Bas hosting Germany on 24 September. A hostile Serbian away fixture follows three days later, giving the new coach an immediate baptism by fire.

Speaking at the press conference, Xavi declared, “On pourrait dire que je suis un enfant du football néerlandais,” recalling his formative years at FC Barcelona under the influence of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. He even referenced the phrase Bas"On in his remarks, underscoring his affinity.

Former midfielder Nigel de Jong praised the appointment, calling Xavi “the ideal choice for the years to come” and highlighting his commitment to an offensive, dominant, spectacular style combined with modern flexibility. De Jong believes the approach will revitalize the Pays‑Bas attack.
