Supercomputer ranks five most likely sanctions for Manchester City
A supercomputer has produced a ranked list of the five punishments it deems most likely for Manchester City after the club was found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. The model gives a fine‑led outcome a 10 percent chance, while also assigning a 10 percent probability to outright expulsion from the league.
Background on the predictions
The analysis was commissioned by Tipman Tips and published with Action Images via Reuters/Jason Cairnduff. It follows an independent commission’s guilty verdict, which City have appealed. The supercomputer’s scenarios range from a £250 million fine with a negligible points deduction to a drop to League Two and a multi‑year points penalty.
Details of the five scenarios
Scenario one – a fine of £250 million or more with a small or suspended points deduction – carries a 10 percent likelihood. In this case Enzo Maresca’s side would retain its 18 points after six league games and avoid relegation.
Scenario two predicts a 10 percent chance of expulsion, sending Manchester City down to League Two and keeping them out of the top flight until the 2031/32 season.
The third‑most likely outcome, also at 10 percent, is a heavy points deduction of between 30 and 45 points. Starting from 18 points, the club would fall to –27 points, dropping from first to last place but still remaining above the relegation zone.
Long‑term penalties and appeal
A 20 percent probability is attached to a multi‑season sanction that would see points deducted across two campaigns and a transfer ban imposed, potentially returning the club to the Premier League in 2029/30.
Manchester City have lodged an appeal against the Premier League charges, meaning the final decision could be months away, possibly not arriving until 2027.
