Gerrard demands severe sanctions against Man City after 114 offences

While Manchester City is under scrutiny for 114 financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is calling for exemplary sanctions. He believes the Citizens must pay a heavy price for their actions, even at the risk of upsetting the competition.

The sanctions under consideration

The Manchester club faces a points penalty or even exclusion from the English elite. These measures, mentioned by the authorities, aim to punish the abuse of power that, according to Gerrard, lasted nine or ten years.

Asked on the programme Overlap Daily, Gerrard said: “I think there should be a recruitment ban. I think there should be points penalties over a set period. And make them suffer as they have made everyone suffer during the nine or ten years they abused their power.”

The former England international clarified that he does not want to take back the championship medal that City won in 2014, nor see the club relegated to the Championship. “That would not be a good decision, because they will bounce back, and it would not be fair for the teams that face them each week,” he added.

Gerrard concludes that an example must be set, even though he respects the Manchester players. His call for harsh sanctions reflects the growing tension between English football authorities and the country’s richest club.
