Sunderland’s battle for Monaco’s Balogun: why the fight matters

Sunderland are facing stiff competition for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun, with Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds United and Fulham also in the hunt, as the 25‑year‑old United States striker logged 19 goals and five assists in 43 matches last season.

Journalist Graeme Bailey reported the interest, noting that the Black Cats must outbid their rivals to secure Balogun’s signature this summer. He highlighted the depth of the chase across the English Championship and Premier League.

This contract with Monaco runs until the summer of 2028, limiting Sunderland’s ability to negotiate a reduced fee. His impressive numbers – 19 goals and five assists across all competitions – underscore his productivity in Ligue 1.

Balogun excels at creating space, possessing vision to craft chances inside the opponent’s penalty area. He combines dribbling skill with the ability to score from wide positions, adding a versatile threat to any attack.

His Premier League experience is limited to a spell at Arsenal, meaning an adaptation period in England is likely. Sunderland will need to manage his transition to the physical demands of the Wearside club’s style.

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has identified Balogun as a potential boost to his frontline. Le Bris believes the striker can compete for a regular starting spot and provide firepower in upcoming seasons.

The competition also includes Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds United and Fulham, all targeting the American international. Each club hopes to capitalize on Balogun’s age of 25, positioning him as a long‑term asset.

With his contract secured until 2028 and his prime years ahead, Balogun would be worth the fight for Sunderland if they can win the race. The club’s willingness to fight for him reflects the ambition to strengthen their attack.
