Steve Bruce backs Maguire and Martinez as Man Utd’s defensive fix

In a candid moment captured by a Picture: Shutterstock Editorial shot, Manchester United legend Steve Bruce leans in to tell Michael Carrick that the club’s defence can only be steadied by a specific pairing. He stresses that Man Utd must rely on experience to halt a leaking back line.

Centre‑back options and de Ligt’s return

Michael Carrick currently has four centre‑halves at his disposal, expanding to five when Matthijs de Ligt returns from a back injury that has kept him sidelined since last November. The veteran defender’s absence has forced Carrick to rotate his options throughout the season.

Last season, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez emerged as the manager’s first‑choice pairing, starting eight of Carrick’s 17 games in charge. Injuries and suspensions disrupted the partnership before it re‑formed for a strong finish to the campaign.

Martinez’s involvement in the World Cup final for Argentina in July means he is still working his way back to full fitness, with Ayden Heaven starting alongside Maguire in the opening game of the season against Hull City on Saturday.

The opening match proved disastrous for United’s back line, undone twice on set pieces in a dismal 2‑0 defeat, highlighting the urgency of stabilising the defence.

Bruce’s defence mantra and the future duo

Steve Bruce told Metro that he assumed Carrick would start with the partnership he finished with last season – Maguire and Martinez – calling them the standout pair. “Maguire is 33 now, he’s had a wonderful career and people have been writing him off for a long time only for him to come back and kick them in the teeth,” Bruce said.

He added, “He is fantastic in both boxes. He is very good at first contact. If he stays injury‑free, he can keep going for another few seasons as he is still a very good player and, alongside Martinez, United’s first‑choice pairing.”

While staff at Carrington regard Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven as the partnership for the future, Bruce remains confident the seasoned duo are the best options this season. Heaven, 19, and Yoro, 20, are seen as long‑term centre‑half solutions, though questions linger over their consistency.

Yoro, a £52 million signing from Lille in 2024, is entering his third season at United and has yet to cement a first‑choice role. Bruce praised the younger pair, noting they “have everything in their locker” to flourish together and that modern centre‑backs must be comfortable on the ball.
