St Mirren’s survival hinges on Craig McLeish’s recruitment

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

St Mirren’s survival this season will rest on Craig McLeish’s ability to recruit players suited to his aggressive, high‑pressing philosophy. Former Buddies midfielder Ryan Flynn warned on the Scottish Football Podcast that the Paisley club must sign such profiles to avoid another relegation fight, even though a top‑six finish is not being pursued.

McLeish took charge in March after Stephen Robinson departed for Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen. The managerial change signalled a new chapter for St Mirren in the Scottish top flight. Flynn described McLeish as “very assertive about how he wants to play,” highlighting his aggressive, front‑foot, high‑press approach.

Flynn stressed that recruitment must deliver ball carriers, width in attack and reliable goalscorers, especially at the top end of the pitch. He pointed to recruitment chief Gavin Miller and his team as responsible for securing such signings. This underscores the challenge of finding players who match McLeish’s vision.

The recent departures of captain Mark O'Hara to Kilmarnock and striker Mikael Mandron were described as a “big loss” for the squad. Both exits heighten the urgency of finding suitable replacements. Flynn noted that the club must act quickly to fill the voids left by these players.

Flynn praised the “fantastic” changes introduced by Stephen Robinson, including a complete overhaul of the training ground and changing rooms. He believes St Mirren’s overall position has improved despite earlier squad issues. After winning the League Cup last season and enjoying European football and top‑six finishes, the team pulled together to avoid relegation, preserving a memorable season.
