Spanish midfielder's ambition drives Liverpool's midfield hunt

At Anfield on Wednesday night, Spanish midfielder Pablo Barrios impressed Liverpool with a dominant display, winning eight duels, being fouled twice and completing 51 of 56 passes, before confirming he is ready to join the Reds. The performance, described as brilliant, underscored his calm composure and high footballing IQ.

Andoni Iraola has not yet ignited a Spanish revolution at Anfield, a contrast to the era of Rafa Benitez who arrived with a Spanish coaching staff and a wave of players from the peninsula.

Benitez's Spanish legacy at Anfield

During Benitez's spell, Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres became club icons and fan favourites at Anfield, cementing a lasting Spanish influence on the stadium.

This summer, Victor Munoz was brought in from Spain fresh off winning the World Cup, while Ronald Araujo was signed from Barcelona and, although not Spanish, speaks the language, aiding Iraola’s communication with the squad.

Liverpool's midfield recruitment strategy

Alexis Mac Allister, 28, has not been offered a new contract by Liverpool; despite that, he has revived under Iraola and is currently praised as the Reds' best midfielder.

Looking ahead, Liverpool are scouting younger talent: Lamine Camara is identified as the number‑one target, and Pablo Barrios has also attracted interest after his recent performance.

Barrios’ statistics from the Wednesday test – eight duels won, two fouls suffered and a 91 percent pass completion rate – highlight his intelligence, high football IQ, calmness on the ball and tenacious tackling.

Whether the Reds will act on Barrios remains undecided, but a further influx of Spanish‑speaking players could reshape Liverpool’s identity under Iraola’s stewardship.
