Spain secure long‑term stability by rewarding De la Fuente

Spain have shown their intent to maintain continuity after a historic World Cup triumph by extending head coach Luis de la Fuente’s contract. The 65‑year‑old, whose previous deal ran until 2028, now signs a six‑year agreement that will keep him in charge through 2032, covering the 2028 European Championship, the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2032.

Why the extension matters

Spain replaced Luis Enrique with Luis de la Fuente in December 2022, a move that has delivered remarkable results. The 65‑year‑old has guided the national side to a Nations League title in 2023 and an Euro 2024 triumph, before adding a second World Cup crown this summer.

The only major setback came in the 2025 Nations League final, where Spain fell to Portugal on penalties. That loss highlighted the fine margins at the highest level but did not diminish the overall success of De la Fuente’s tenure.

Contract details and future outlook

The previous contract was due to expire in 2028, but the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved a new six‑year deal that runs until 2032. The extension secures De la Fuente’s leadership for the 2028 European Championship, the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2032.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan said the coach deserved improved financial terms after his achievements. “We are seeking a project of stability and confidence,” Louzan added, praising De la Fuente as the most decorated coach in the national team’s history.

Before taking charge of the senior side, De la Fuente spent almost a decade with Spain’s youth teams, winning the 2015 Under‑19 Euros and the U21 Euro 2019. He also led the Olympic squad to a silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Spain will co‑host the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Morocco, while Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will host a few matches as part of the centenary celebrations. The long‑term contract aligns the national team’s project with this major upcoming event.
