Spain remain unbeaten after Kane's missed penalty at Wembley

World champion Spain continued its unbeaten run in the Nations League at Wembley by defeating England with a narrow win – a result that secures the top spot in the tournament.

First appearance as title holder

In its first appearance as world champion, coach Luis de la Fuente, whose contract was recently extended until 2032, forced England into a defeat. Already after two minutes, Lamine Yamal gave the Spaniards the lead, before England equalised within five minutes.

English captain Harry Kane scored in the 40th minute to make it 2-1, but his later penalty in the 54th minute was unsuccessful. The shot hit the crossbar, preventing a potential 3-1 for England and turning Kane into a tragic hero.

Turning point after the missed attempt

After the missed penalty, the Spaniards capitalised on a turnover by Nico O'Reilly. Alex Baena restored the equaliser to 2-2 in the 60th minute, and just a quarter of an hour later he set up Mikel Oyarzabal for 3-2.

Both Spanish players, Baena and Oyarzabal, had only been brought on in the 54th minute, underscoring the efficiency of the coaching staff.

Parallel match: Croatia triumphs

On the same matchday, Croatia secured a 2:1‑win over the Czech Republic in Prague. Veteran Luka Modric, captain and former champion, scored in the 47th minute, while Marco Pasalic sealed the result in the 77th minute.

Adam Karabec had previously equalised for the Czechs in the 54th minute, but the Croatian side retained the advantage.

With this victory, Spain extended its run to 39 games and remains unbeaten, while England, despite a good performance, has to accept the defeat.
