Spain aims to lock in De la Fuente through 2030 World Cup

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) will sit down with head coach Luis de la Fuente after the summer to discuss extending his contract, which currently runs until the European Championship in 2028, with the aim of keeping him in charge for the 2030 World Cup.

According to AS, the RFEF will meet Luis de la Fuente after the summer to negotiate a new contract following his recent successes with the national side.

His current deal expires at the end of the European Championship in 2028, but the federation intends the extension to also cover the 2030 World Cup.

“​We assume he will stay with us a while longer. If it were up to me, he would extend his contract, but I am not alone in that. In 2030 we have an appointment with the history books and we would like Luis to be part of it,” said Spanish president Rafael Louzán after Spain’s World Cup final victory against Argentina.

The interview was interpreted as an intention declaration for a fresh extension. Within the federation there is confidence that De la Fuente is the right person to maintain the level Spain has reached. After a well‑deserved holiday both sides will meet to formalise the extension.

De la Fuente has been employed by the RFEF since 2013. He spent his first five years coaching the Spain Under‑19 side and from 2018 to 2022 led the Jong Spain team. In 2022 he took charge of the senior squad, guiding them to a European Championship, a Nations League title and a second World Cup triumph this summer.

If the talks succeed, De la Fuente will remain at the helm through the 2030 World Cup, giving the Spanish national team continuity at the highest level. For the 65‑year‑old coach it secures the opportunity to add another historic milestone to his résumé.
