Southampton's £9m gamble aims to revive attack with Dobbin
Southampton missed the Championship play‑offs and are seeking a vital boost to their attack. The club identified a gap after the campaign and wants to reshape its recruitment ahead of the new season. Managerial statements say the willingness to spend marks a shift in the Saints’ recruitment strategy.
Almost £9 million is on the table for Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin. The fee would see the 23‑year‑old join Southampton, giving the Saints a vital attacking option. Southampton have already outbid a number of Championship rivals, including Middlesbrough, to secure the player.
Dobbin never featured for Villa after his £10 million transfer from Everton in 2024. He spent the previous season on loan at Preston North End, logging 41 appearances and scoring 11 goals. Earlier loan spells took him to West Brom and Norwich, adding further experience across the division.
Dobbin originally joined Villa two years ago as part of a separate deal that sent midfielder Tim Iroegbunam to the Toffees. Both clubs cited compliance with Profit and Sustainability regulations as a factor in the swap.
The transfer appears set to be finalised imminently, pending standard formalities. The report, supplied by [Getty Images], also contains additional Images from the negotiation process, and the Saints admitted they monitored three clubs during the campaign, having spied on Middlesbrough before their semi‑final in May.
