Southampton loans Jay Robinson to Monza to sidestep Nathan Tella repeat

Southampton have agreed to loan 19‑year‑old forward Jay Robinson to Serie A side Monza, a move designed to avoid a repeat of the Nathan Tella situation that saw the club lose a key player after a successful loan spell.

Promotion ambitions and recent setbacks

The Saints are targeting promotion to the Premier League in the 2026/27 season after ending the previous campaign with a play‑off final place, only to be expelled for breaching the EFL’s anti‑spying rules. Manager Tonda Eckert remains hopeful of another play‑off spot, despite a four‑point deduction that will see Southampton start the season behind rivals at St. Mary’s.

Summer activity and the Robinson loan

Southampton’s summer business has been busy, with Lewis Dobbin, George Long, Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin arriving on permanent deals, while Ross Stewart left on a free transfer to Swansea City.

Robinson made 26 Championship appearances last season, including seven starts, and contributed two goals and one assist; with attacking options such as Finn Azaz, Leo Scienza, Kuryu Matsuki, Lewis Dobbin and Tom Fellows, he was unlikely to secure regular minutes at Southampton.

The loan to Monza is intended to give him regular game time and to prevent a scenario similar to Nathan Tella’s loan to Burnley in 2022, which helped the Clarets win promotion and later sparked permanent interest. For Robinson, the season in Serie A offers consistent minutes and a chance to develop away from the crowded Saints attack; for Southampton, the deal reduces the risk of losing a player after a breakout loan while conceding some direct control over his progress.
