Smalling returns to Europe, signs with Porto after stint in Arabia
Chris Smalling, 36, has signed as a free agent with FC Porto after ending his contract with Al-Fayha, allowing the Portuguese club to register him immediately.
Contract and terms
The English defender has signed a contract until the end of the season, with an option for an additional year, according to the club's official statement. The arrival comes with no transfer fee, as Smalling arrives on a free transfer after his stint in Arabia.
Official statements
"FC Porto has just signed a new defender with international experience and a proven track record in the top leagues of the world: Chris Smalling has signed a contract until the end of the season, with an option for an additional year, and joins the national champion as a free agent," the club's statement said.
Journalist Marc Canosa, who covered the story, recalled that Smalling had played for teams such as Manchester United and Roma, his last European club before moving to Arabia.
Smalling's first impressions
The Englishman told Porto's official channels that he arrives “with great hunger, ready to compete and prove it in every training and match.” He added that “I know Porto's history, I know that here only winning matters.”
After his arrival at the Dragão, Smalling described the experience of going straight from the airport to the stadium for the physical tests, surrounded by the club's trophies.
Role and leadership
Smalling stated that his goal is to provide leadership and help the team on the pitch, anticipating a long season with cups and European competitions. He also highlighted the importance of the link with coach Francesco Farioli, who explained his vision for the player.
The defender explained that he chose the number 6 because “5 and 6 have always been my favourite numbers; 6 was available and it seemed like a sign.”
