Ronaldo's sudden exit fuels doubts over Portugal's Nations League hopes

Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41-year‑old Al Nassr forward, left the Portugal national team camp on Wednesday, just hours before the Ligue Nations match against Denmark on Thursday. The departure came as the squad was about to start a training session, and the player boarded a private jet for Madrid. His exit follows a week of speculation about his future with the Selecão.

Ronaldo's abrupt exit

According to L’Equipe, the Portuguese federation president and head coach Jorge Jesus tried to persuade the striker to stay, but their efforts failed. Ronaldo, who plays in the Saudi Pro League for Al Nassr, returned to his hotel, then walked to the airport where his jet awaited. Jesus later explained that he had a plan with “Cris”, saying he had agreed with the player not to feature in the Norway and Denmark games.

Squad reshuffle ahead of Denmark

Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo would not be selected for the Thursday clash in Copenhagen, a decision made in mutual agreement. The coach recalled that Ronaldo had sat on the bench for the first time in 18 years during the Norway match, after Portugal had already beaten Wales and Norway. Both victories kept Portugal on track in the third matchday of the Nations League.

Ronaldo posted on his social media channels that he wishes “Portugal and all my teammates the very best, without exception”. He reminded fans that he made his debut for the national side over 23 years ago and has amassed 234 caps and 146 goals in that time.

Portuguese media report that the federation’s disciplinary code could impose a sanction of up to six months for leaving the camp without permission. Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, reacted angrily on Instagram, writing that “CR7 deserved more respect”.

With Ronaldo absent, the Portuguese Football Federation assigned the iconic number 7 shirt to 27‑year‑old Rafael Leão of AC Milan. Leão, who wore number 17 in the first two fixtures, will wear the number 7 for the Denmark game, as required by UEFA’s squad‑number regulations.

The match against Denmark at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium now proceeds without the veteran forward, leaving many to wonder if this marks the end of Ronaldo’s international career. Portugal will rely on the remaining squad to maintain their position in the Nations League as the campaign heads into its decisive stages.
