Shearer praises Caicedo’s ‘nasty’ drive as Chelsea thrash Bournemouth
Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday lifted the Blues to fifth place in the Premier League, edging Brentford only on goal difference. The win also marked a memorable home debut for veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson.
Caicedo’s impact from the start
Returning midfielder Moises Caicedo started the attack that produced Jordan Henderson’s stunning opening goal inside two minutes. The Ecuadorian had featured for just 14 minutes this season before the match, yet he showed no signs of rust.
Within moments, Morgan Rogers added a second when his deflected strike sailed past former Chelsea goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic. Joao Pedro then netted either side of Evanilson’s scrambled effort, further tightening Chelsea’s stranglehold. Premier League legend Alan Shearer reserved special praise for Caicedo, describing his performance as ‘superb’ and highlighting his willingness to do the ‘nasty’ side of the game. Alan Shearer said, “The front three were brilliant again, as well as Jordan Henderson.” But Caicedo makes such a difference to this Chelsea team because of his experience and his ability in that midfield both defensively and when he wins that ball, how he makes things look pretty simple but so effective,” the former England and Newcastle striker said.
Shearer added that Caicedo’s positioning allowed Henderson to advance, noting the midfielder’s quick ball recovery and forward pass that set up the opening strike.
“It’s simple but the way he gets the ball… first thought is forward. Chelsea are on the front foot and his relationship and understanding allows Henderson to advance because he knows what’s behind him,” Shearer explained.
Chelsea’s next challenge
The result saw Chelsea rise to fifth in the league, a position they will look to consolidate when they travel to face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Manager Xabi Alonso’s side will aim to maintain the momentum generated by Caicedo’s engine‑room work and the attacking trio of Henderson, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer, who benefited from the midfield’s defensive contributions.
