United's crisis deepens after red card and last‑minute equaliser
On Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford, Bryan Mbeumo gave Manchester United the lead against Tottenham Hotspur, finding the net in the 73rd minute. Five minutes later Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for a head‑butt on Luke Shaw, leaving the visitors a man down as the match progressed.
United seemed poised to secure a rare victory, but Dominic Solanke restored parity for Tottenham two minutes into added time. The United supporters erupted in jeers, booing their own players both at half‑time and when the final whistle blew.
Michael Carrick tried to calm the atmosphere, saying, « Quand les choses ne se passent pas tout à fait comme prévu, je peux parfois comprendre cette réaction ». He added, “Of course it hurts, it hurts a lot. It’s not a pleasant experience, but sometimes you simply have to grit your teeth and get through it.”
League position deepens crisis
After six league games United sit twelfth in the Premier League with just six points, marking their poorest start in exactly forty years. The Red Devils have yet to register a win in their last four matches across all competitions.
Their winless run includes a League Cup exit at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion. United’s only two victories in eight official matches have come against newly promoted Ipswich Town in the league and Azerbaijani side FK Sabah in the Champions League. Moreover, they have failed to win any of their three most recent games when reduced to ten men.
Champions League test looms
On Tuesday United travel to the Atlético de Madrid stadium for a Champions League group match, a fixture that Carrick describes as probably the toughest challenge of their season so far.
Pre‑season discussions about a possible change of manager have already begun in England, yet Carrick retains the confidence of the club’s hierarchy. The uncertainty adds another layer to United’s already turbulent campaign.
