Severe rain threatens Como‑United Champions League tie on Wednesday

Torrential rain and an orange warning in Lombardy have raised the prospect of a postponement for the Man United Champions League tie at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Wednesday. Manchester United arrived in Italy for the matchday three fixture, with the game slated for a 5:45 pm UK broadcast. Lombardy’s civil protection service issued an orange warning for rain, describing it as a severe risk of dangerous weather and urging vigilance. Simon Peach of the Press Association reported that 64 mm of rain is forecast before kick‑off, and rain has already fallen throughout Tuesday afternoon and evening in northern Italy.
Only one of the four stands at the stadium is covered, meaning many supporters will face wet conditions. Lightning is also possible around kick‑off, but Como officials say the pitch should hold up and avoid a postponement.
Como’s historic night and manager’s view
Como are hosting United in the Champions League for the first time in their history and will face an English opponent on one of the biggest evenings for the club. Manager Cesc Fabregas called the occasion “a historic day” and urged his players to play without fear, stressing humility and the family‑like bond within the squad.
Fabregas highlighted the contributions of young talent such as Douvikas, praised goalkeeper Butez and noted the competition with Sanchez for the starting spot. He added that the team will “play our football” and try to win despite United’s current difficulties.
United head coach Michael Carrick downplayed the weather, saying: “No, nothing immediate from me, we’re used to the rain. We’ll make the most of it!” Six United players missed Tuesday’s training – Ayden Heaven, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu – a blow to preparation.
United are eager to end a run of six matches without a win in all competitions. Their last European outing was a 2‑0 loss to Atletico Madrid, after which Martinez issued a scathing rant at the club board, later apologised and featured in a 1‑1 draw at Leeds United before leaving at half‑time with an injury. The English side have already secured a Champions League victory, beating Sabah FK 4‑0.
