Serie A’s new ‘first useful date’ rule aims to end match delays

The Lega Serie A has officially unveiled a new regulation for the 2026/27 season that governs the rescheduling of postponed and interrupted matches, with the explicit aim of cutting delays and providing precise timetables for both Serie A and the Campionato Primavera 1.

The main innovation is the introduction of the “first useful date” principle, which sets the earliest possible slot for replaying a suspended fixture.

Postponed matches will be placed in the first available window that fits the international calendar and guarantees at least two free days for each club between official commitments.

For games that have not yet started, the default rule mandates a replay on the following day, and a postponement will only be triggered in specific cases such as an unplayable pitch, a clash with a FIFA window, an overly tight schedule, or directives from the FIGC or sports‑justice authorities.

Interrupted matches are handled differently: if no disciplinary sanctions apply, the contest will resume only for the remaining minutes, as definitively determined by the referee, and will pick up from the exact game state recorded at the time of suspension.

The regulation also clarifies player eligibility for the resumed portion: any player registered with the club at the moment of interruption may be used, even if not in the original squad, while any player transferred or released after the suspension is excluded.

Clubs may field up to three new signings acquired after the interruption, provided they are not taken from the opponent; earlier substitutions and expulsions remain valid, and any disciplinary decision by the referee will be reviewed by the sports‑justice authorities only after the match.

The new framework was published on Google Discover within the Preferred Sources section of the A‑A+ Press column, underscoring the league’s commitment to transparency and a more predictable calendar for Serie A and its youth counterpart.
