Scotland's frailties cost them against Slovenia at Hampden
Scotland fell to a 2-1 defeat by Slovenia at Hampden on Saturday, surrendering a half‑time lead despite Ryan Christie’s early strike. The loss caps a four‑match Nations League window and leaves Sebastien Pocognoli’s side third in League B1, three points behind the Slovenians.
First‑half promise
Scotland began the encounter in Glasgow with purpose, and Ryan Christie broke the deadlock on 32 minutes, firing the hosts’ first shot on target into the net. The goal gave Scotland a 1‑0 lead at the interval and suggested a strong start to the Nations League tie.
Goalkeeper Angus Gunn was left exposed as Slovenia generated chances, and Stephen Welsh, who started confidently, was withdrawn at the hour‑mark when Sebastien Pocognoli switched to a back four after the teams were level.
Jack Hendry returned to the line‑up after serving a suspension and helped clear a danger‑area effort before the second half, while left‑centre back Luis Binks earned a booking for an over‑zealous challenge, highlighting the defensive strain.
Second‑half collapse and fallout
Slovenia responded after the break, equalising on 56 minutes when Aljosa Matko slotted home, and then seized the winner on 72 minutes as Danijel Sturm drove forward and finished from a cut‑back.
Pocognoli says Scotland stay on track after Slovenia defeat
Player ratings reflected the mixed performances: Angus Gunn received a five, Stephen Welsh a six, Jack Hendry a five and Luis Binks a five out of ten.
The 2‑1 loss leaves Scotland third in League B1, three points behind the Slovenians in second place, and the side now faces an uphill task to finish second and secure a second‑seed berth for the December Euro 2028 draw.
Having already seen their hopes of topping the group evaporate after Switzerland’s 3‑0 victory over North Macedonia, Scotland remain in search of their first home win under Pocognoli as they look to revive their campaign.
