Scoring Weghorst highlights Twente’s missed chance in Budapest

Scoring forward Wout Weghorst opened his Twente account in an 85‑minute battle against Ferencvaros on Tuesday evening, but the goal was insufficient to keep the Dutch side out of the third qualifying round of the Conference League.

FC Twente pressed for most of the match, launching a strong offensive in the final phase, yet they could not force a win against Ferencvaros, sending the Tukkers down to the third round of the Conference League.

Weghorst celebrated his first goal for FC Twente with a noticeable grimace for the camera after the final whistle.

The club had lost 1‑2 the previous week and failed to make an impact in Budapest, a situation worsened by a red card for Philippe Rommens that left Twente playing with a man more for an extended period.

Speaking to , Weghorst said, "This is really a missed chance. We didn’t start well, but after the red card the game changed. We gained more control, but we came out dramatically from the dressing room. That must not happen."

He added, "We only came into the match after they made it 2‑0, but that was far too late. When Younes Taha and Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink entered, the crosses improved and we scored twice, but it was far too late."

Reflecting on his consolation strike, Weghorst noted, "I’m glad I made my first today, that’s nice, but it doesn’t help anything. We wanted to reach the Europa League. The club worked hard for that. In matches like this we must be businesslike and mature, but we are not. We still have many steps to take."

Captain Bart van Rooij warned, "We are too much knitting, it wasn’t direct enough. They kept the back end closed, but we need to do better. That’s the painful conclusion of today. It didn’t come out."

FC Twente’s European season continues as they head into the third qualifying round of the Conference League, where they will meet DAC 1904. The first leg is scheduled for 6 August in Enschede, with the return fixture a week later in Slovakia.
