Sancho weighs 97% pay cut as Getafe bid looms in summer
Jadon Sancho, the 26‑year‑old former Manchester United winger, is weighing a move back to the pitch after receiving a Getafe offer that cuts his weekly earnings by roughly 97 percent. The Telegraph reports the Spanish club has tabled £335,000 – about R$ 2.2 million – for the remainder of the season.
Manchester United tenure and wages
United signed Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021 for a reported £73 million, equivalent to about R$ 521 million at the time. During his spell at Old Trafford he earned £250,000 each week – roughly R$ 1.6 million – amounting to nearly £13 million a year, or around R$ 86.3 million.
The winger failed to meet expectations and was released when his contract expires in the 2025/26 season. He has not featured since 20 May, when he appeared in the Europa League final on loan at Aston Villa, the competition’s champions.
Sancho, like former United teammate Mason Greenwood who spent 2023/24 with Getafe, believes a spell in LaLiga could revive his career. He feels the Spanish style could suit his pace and technical abilities.
Getafe’s wage‑cap hurdle and ambitions
Getafe manager José Bordalás, under pressure after accusing the board of insufficient reinforcement, has highlighted the club’s lack of a natural winger, a gap that contributed to their 16th‑place LaLiga finish and 30th spot in the Conference League.
Because the club is already at its salary‑cap limit, Sancho’s registration would need a special LaLiga exemption. Getafe secured a similar waiver last season to sign right‑back Daniel Carvajal after his Real Madrid contract ended, with owner Ángel Torres providing a financial guarantee to satisfy league rules.
The £335,000 proposal translates to just over £10,000 per week – about R$ 66 000 – a tiny fraction of the £250,000 weekly wage he earned at United.
In total, Sancho made 83 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists. His contributions were limited by irregular playing time and multiple loan spells.
Sancho says he will decide after a meeting with Bordalás, with the final verdict to be announced shortly.
