Saka’s big impact silences Arteta’s goal‑scoring challenge

Arsenal’s 3‑0 victory over Lille in the Champions League underlined Bukayo Saka’s response to Mikel Arteta’s demand for a higher goal output, securing a dominant European performance and reinforcing the Gunners’ attacking options.

Goal and assist seal the win

Saka entered the match from the bench, shook off a recent illness and immediately influenced the game. He set up Eberechi Eze’s strike that made it 2‑0 before rolling his own confident one‑touch finish to complete the scoring. The England forward therefore contributed both a goal and an assist in the win.

Arteta had deliberately tweaked Saka’s positioning ahead of the French visitors to bring him closer to goal. “He delivered with real quality,” the Gunners boss said before kickoff, adding that the aim was to increase the volume of chances for Saka.

Statistics and expectations

At 25, Saka has now scored four goals in nine games this season and recorded nine Champions League assists, placing him behind Thierry Henry (16) and Cesc Fabregas (14) in that competition. He has 19 goals in major European contests for Arsenal, second only to Henry’s 42.

Artura’s target for Saka is “two or three” goals per game, a benchmark the forward has yet to hit against Lille but which reflects the high expectations placed on him. “If he misses the chance, so be it. The more volume we generate, the bigger the probability of him scoring more goals,” Arteta explained.

Domestically, Saka scored 20 goals in a season only once – in 2023‑24 – with 16 of those in the Premier League. Internationally, he has five goals in his last four England matches and netted a double in a 7‑0 Nations League demolition of Croatia.

Arteta praised Saka’s adaptability after the match, noting the winger’s ability to find “great positions, getting shots, one‑touch finishes and tap‑ins”. He added that Saka could have added “another four or five goals by now, easily” if the current form continues.

Following a press conference where Arteta challenged Saka, the manager later joked, “I just killed you in the press conference, good luck tomorrow.” Saka laughed, acknowledging the conversation and confirming his commitment to the big objectives set by his boss.
