Arsenal’s late surge turns a tight night into a Champions League triumph
Jurrien Timber opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark, Eberechi Eze doubled the lead three minutes later and substitute Bukayo Saka added a third in the 71st minute, giving Arsenal a comfortable 3-0 Champions League victory over Lille at the Emirates Stadium.
First‑half stalemate
For the opening hour the match was evenly poised, with Lille frustrating the Gunners despite several chances. Bruno Guimaraes saw a neat build‑up with Noni Maduke and Timber but his effort drifted wide. A cross from Timber was headed straight at Lille keeper Berke Ozer, and Ayase Ueda’s early strike was ruled out by an off‑side flag.
Lille thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute, but the goal was disallowed. Eze, given a rare start, forced a save from Ozer, while Guimaraes’ half‑volley was cleared on the stroke of half‑time. The visitors also appealed for a penalty after a clash with Alexsandro, but referee Felix Zwayer waved it away and VAR did not intervene.
Second‑half breakthrough
Arsenal’s breakthrough came when Timber found space on his first touch, chipped the advancing Ozer and sent the ball home in the 64th minute. Just three minutes later Eze capitalised on a cross from Guimaraes, slotting home his second of the night.
Substitutes Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz entered the fray, and Saka’s introduction proved decisive. He linked with Havertz before finishing the final strike in the 71st minute, marking his fourth goal of the season.
Late cameo appearances included 40‑year‑old Olivier Giroud and 24‑year‑old Max Dowman, though neither altered the scoreline. The win gave Mikel Arteta’s side their second victory from two European matches and their ninth win in ten across all competitions this season.
Arsenal now sit six points from six in the group, unbeaten and without conceding, while Lille return to Lille with a clear defeat and a need to regroup.
