Rumours of exit clash with starting role for Owen Wijndal at Ajax

Owen Wijndal has been described as a cat with nine lives, repeatedly linked with a departure from Ajax yet still finding himself on the pitch. The latest contrast shows him starting in the Conference League-voorrondewedstrijd against FK Vojvodina while rumours of an exit swirl.

Technical director Jordi Cruijff originally intended to let the left‑back exit the club. His plan was to open the door for a permanent replacement.

New head coach Míchel, however, has continued to rely on Wijndal in his squad. Míchel recently said, “Van veel spelers weet ik niet wat er met ze gaat gebeuren…”, expressing uncertainty over many transfer situations.

Ajax invested roughly ten million euros to acquire Caio Henrique from AS Monaco. The signing was intended to provide a fresh option at left back.

Despite the arrival of Caio Henrique, Wijndal featured in the starting eleven of the Conference League-voorrondewedstrijd versus FK Vojvodina. Ajax secured a 1‑4 victory in that match.

In an interview with Het Parool, Wijndal stated, “Ik heb al eerder gezegd dat ik niet zomaar wegga bij Ajax. Ajax is een fantastische club en ik heb het hier heel erg naar mijn zin.” He added that a move would only happen if a suitable club appeared, but nothing concrete is currently on the table. En the club’s supporters continue to debate his future.

The recurring stay of the wing‑back therefore delivers another shock for Amsterdam. Social media may flood with criticism, yet both Wijndal and Míchel appear unfazed by the backlash.
