Rovers' slump hides €15m prize as Bradley eyes KuPS showdown

Stephen Bradley warned that Shamrock Rovers’ recent slump is a reminder of the high standards the Hoops have maintained over the past few seasons, as they prepare for a Conference League play‑off by hosting Finland’s KuPS at Tallaght on Thursday evening.

European pedigree and prize money

Bradley has guided the club to back‑to‑back group‑stage appearances in Europe’s lowest‑tier competition and an additional campaign in the 2022/23 season. Those runs have generated over €15 million in prize money for the west Dublin club.

Rovers’ home record this season has been outstanding, with only a single league defeat to Sligo on their own turf. In Europe they have won every home match, beating Floriana 5‑1, Ararat‑Armenia 2‑1 and Egnatia 3‑1.

Bradley described the 5‑1 loss to Egnatia last week as “the worst performance I’ve ever seen from us.” The disappointment was compounded when a 2‑0 lead vanished in the FAI Cup tie against St Patrick’s Athletic, ending in a defeat.

“Our three home performances in Europe have been the best we’ve ever had in Europe,” Bradley told RTÉ Sport, adding that the away results could have been the opposite and must be rectified. He stressed that the team must improve to avoid another setback.

Qualification for the Conference League league phase for a third consecutive year is worth €3.17 million, with €400,000 awarded for each subsequent victory. The new UEFA league‑ranking bonus means the Hoops could add several million euros to their accounts by Christmas if they progress.

KuPS sit atop the Finnish Veikkausliiga, five points clear of Inter Turku, and have limited experience against Irish clubs, their only recent encounter being a 5‑4 qualifier loss to Derry City three years ago. They reached last season’s league phase and the knockout stage before falling 3‑0 on aggregate to Lech Poznan.

Bradley called the Finns a “really good team, well organised, with strong threats and tactically very good,” describing the tie as a “real 50‑50 game.” He acknowledged the challenge but believes Rovers can rise to the occasion.
