Ronaldo says Jesus broke promises, vows return after punishment
Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41‑year‑old Portugal forward, announced on Wednesday that broken promises by coach Jorge Jesus compelled him to leave the national team camp in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark. He apologised to teammates, expects the Portuguese Football Federation to discipline him and insists he will return after serving any suspension. Portugal’s 2‑1 victory over Norway in Oslo was mentioned as the backdrop to his departure.
Disputed fitness agreement
Ronaldo said he had a written plan with Jesus to sit out the Norway and Denmark fixtures as part of a fitness‑management programme. On the day of the Norway game, Jesus allegedly told him he would feature for about 30 minutes, yet Ronaldo remained on the bench, warming up from halftime but never entering the 2‑1 win.
"If I am physically fit, playing for my club, hopefully scoring goals, then after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team," Ronaldo declared in a lengthy statement.
Meeting and eight‑point document
Ronaldo later met Jesus in the presence of Al Nassr sporting director Simao Coutinho. He said an eight‑point document was prepared for Jesus to address, stating he never demanded playing time, had respected the coach’s decisions and that asking him to warm up without using him was a mistake.
"It was the second time he had broken his word to me," Ronaldo added, explaining why he left the camp without waiting for further broken promises.

Jesus’ rebuttal and federation silence
Jesus disputed Ronaldo’s version, insisting no such agreement existed and leaving open the possibility of the striker’s return to the national side.
The Portuguese Football Federation did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Ronaldo’s statement.
Ronaldo was also seen warming up ahead of Portugal’s 2026 World Cup round‑of‑16 clash with Spain at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, United States, scheduled for 6 July 2026.
