Ronaldo's fiery exit fuels clash with Jorge Jesus
Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41‑year‑old Portuguese forward, posted a 2000‑word statement on Instagram on Tuesday, detailing why he walked out of the Portugal national team camp after being an unused substitute in a recent Nations League game. He says the incident was triggered by a breach of a pre‑agreed playing plan by manager Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo wrote that he stormed down the tunnel and left the squad, then publicly criticised the Portuguese national team manager for breaking the agreement they had reached. He added that, although he accepts responsibility for his reaction, he believes he should face a punishment comparable to any other player in the same situation.
The agreed plan and early conversations
According to Ronaldo, after the 2026 World Cup he prepared a letter to the Portuguese people for when he would eventually depart the team. On the flight back from the United States, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation asked him to reconsider his decision and solicited his opinion on the appointment of the current head coach, which Ronaldo supported.
He later met Jorge Jesus at the Cidade do Futebol, where his club was holding a pre‑season camp, and was told that his presence was “fundamental to the project”. The coach outlined a plan that Ronaldo would start the first match, sit out the last, and that the team would make three to four changes per game. Jesus also suggested Ronaldo might stay in Portugal for the Norway and Denmark fixtures, a proposal Ronaldo rejected immediately.

Norway match and the broken promise
Ronaldo recounted that during the Norway match an assistant informed him that Jesus wanted him to play thirty minutes. Despite being focused on his physical recovery and believing he would not feature, Ronaldo agreed to the request. He warmed up at half‑time, waited on the pitch, and was never called, which he described as the coach breaking his word.
After the match, Ronaldo said he wanted to leave quietly and did not greet the fans, an omission he called “solely my responsibility”. He apologised to the Portuguese supporters, to the fans in general, and to anyone who had travelled to see him, acknowledging that his actions were a personal failing.
Jesus' own letter admits mistake
In a letter that Jesus intended to read at a press conference, he wrote: "Cometí un error al hacer calentar a alguien de la talla de Pelé o Maradona" – admitting he had erred by warming up a player of Ronaldo’s stature and then not playing him. The letter also affirmed that the Norway match was not part of the original plan and that Ronaldo had agreed to the revised proposal.

Ronaldo concluded by saying he is open to any sanction, noting that as captain of the Portuguese national team any misconduct carries an aggravating circumstance. He reiterated his apology and accepted that “attitudes must have consequences”.
