Ronaldo provisionally suspended: the FPF initiates urgent procedure

While the Portuguese Federation confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo's preventive suspension, the FPF's social media page had celebrated his goal scored in Saudi Arabia the previous evening, creating a stark contrast between the official discipline and the apparent attempt at reconciliation.

The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo. The notice was published as a COMMUNIQUE on the official FPF website.

Resolution of 9 October 2026

The Non-Professional Section resolved on 9 October 2026, requesting to ascertain the possible disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on 7 October 2026. A non-automatic preventive suspension was ordered, with the procedure being of an urgent nature.

Procedure transmitted on 10 October

The measure was transmitted on 10 October 2026 to the Disciplinary Investigative Committee of the FPF. The communication was kept out of the public eye until the end of the investigation.

The incident dates back to the eve of the Nations League match against Denmark, when Ronaldo left the training camp in Copenhagen aboard a national team van. His departure occurred after skipping training for the third consecutive day. The match against Denmark was scheduled for the upcoming weekend, but the team will have to face the game without the captain.

Coach Jorge Jesus had warmed up Ronaldo but did not field him against Norway, keeping him on the bench for the full 90 minutes. The lack of inclusion heightened tensions, prompting the captain to abandon the camp.

Ronaldo, forward of Al‑Nassr, sent a statement to explain his version of events; read HERE for the full text. His message was released shortly before the FPF's decision.

Portugal's captain was already subject to an automatic suspension before the Council's intervention. However, the FPF's social media page had celebrated his goal in Saudi Arabia the previous evening, suggesting an attempt at rapprochement.
