Ronaldo gets 30‑day ban and €255 fine, but could already play against Denmark

The Portuguese football association has sanctioned superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for his unilateral departure from the national team with a 30‑day suspension and a fine of €255, but the disciplinary measure could end already before the next international match against Denmark on November 14.

Background of the disciplinary measure

Ronaldo, 41 years old, left the team camp in Denmark on September 30, after he had not been substituted into the game following a 90‑minute bench stint against Norway. Coach Jorge Jesus had previously announced that Ronaldo would at least be on the field for half an hour. The failure to honour this promise triggered the conflict.

The disciplinary council found that Ronaldo had deliberately breached Article 160 of the disciplinary code. The suspension had already begun the day after his departure and has therefore been largely served.

Consequences for the national squad

Because of the suspension Ronaldo will miss the two Nations League matches against Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17. Portugal has already secured qualification for the quarter‑finals, so his absence is not decisive on sporting grounds.

Gonçalo Ramos, the striker’s deputy, scored a goal in both of the mentioned games. Ronaldo has so far earned 234 caps for Portugal.

Reactions and possible return

Neither Ronaldo nor coach Jorge Jesus has publicly commented on an immediate return. In an Instagram statement Ronaldo criticised the coach and asked teammates and fans for forgiveness.

Ronaldo admitted in his own statement that his decision to leave the camp was not correct, and he accepts the possible disciplinary consequences.

Since the 30‑day suspension has already been largely served, Ronaldo could theoretically be back in the squad for the next international match against Denmark, provided the coach includes him again.
