Nantes' aborted takeover leaves a surprising ambassador plan on ice
FC Nantes' proposed takeover by Paulo Tavares was halted after Waldemar Kita rejected the bid for lacking financial guarantees, ending a plan that had earmarked former Brazil international Marcelo as a club ambassador and even floated the name of rapper Snoop Dogg.
Ambassador plan to showcase the “beautiful game”
The club had been looking for a figure to personify the ‘beautiful game’, a concept long associated with its yellow and green identity, and saw an ambassador as a way to refresh its image on the international stage.
Marcelo signed a conditional contract that would have seen the former Brazilian international lend his image to the project and embody the club’s aesthetic philosophy, but the agreement became void once the takeover fell through. The details were also published in L’Équipe, which highlighted the conditional nature of Marcelo’s deal.
The proposal also mentioned Snoop Dogg, with the prospective owners hoping the American rapper’s heritage could echo Nantes’ historic role as France’s first slave port and attract a global audience; the rapper had previously been spotted with Nicolas Anelka and Éric Abidal in Dubai in 2019.
Financial guarantees stall the takeover
Paulo Tavares’ acquisition plan was presented as more than a change of ownership, aiming to give the new direction an international dimension and to revitalise the club’s brand beyond immediate sporting concerns.
Waldemar Kita ultimately turned down the offer, citing insufficient financial guarantees, and his decision rendered Marcelo’s conditional deal null and ended any prospect of involving Snoop Dogg, leaving the ambitious communication project dead at the Beaujoire stadium. The scheme was presented as a football‑centric branding exercise.
With the takeover abandoned, FC Nantes remains under its current ownership and the club’s search for a high‑profile ambassador continues without the promised international flair. The club has yet to announce any alternative ambassadorial projects.
