Ronaldo faces lengthy ban after storming out of Portugal camp
Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation after walking out of the Portugal Nations League camp following a dispute with manager Jorge Jesus over his playing time. The veteran forward left the training base on Tuesday, issued a public apology and signalled he accepts any sanction.
The report, written by Daniel Orme, a Sports Writer, appeared in the Sport section and was accompanied by two Images. Readers can View the full statement on the federation’s website.
Suspension details set by the federation
Portuguese FA rules automatically trigger a ban when a player abandons a national team camp. A disciplinary council will now decide the length, which could range from one to six months. Any sanction longer than a month would keep Ronaldo out of the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales.
Ronaldo's apology and captaincy
Ronaldo addressed the incident on Tuesday, saying:
“I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp. … The responsibility is exclusively mine. I apologise to the Portuguese people once again… I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor.”
He added that attitudes must have consequences and that the rules apply to everyone. Since his debut in 2014, Ronaldo has made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored a record 146 goals, underscoring his status as the nation’s all‑time leading scorer.
Manager's comments fuel the dispute
Jorge Jesus, referred to as the boss in the camp, responded: “I read the statement and now I do (like I do) every day. I’m going to the federation to work, think about the team.” Earlier, he told reporters, “I make the decisions,” a remark that reportedly enraged Ronaldo.
According to journalists Guillermo Rai and Mario Cortegana, Ronaldo walked out of the camp minutes after hearing the comment and indicated he would not return until the sanction is served. He has since said he is willing to be called up again once the ban is completed.
