Ronaldo's admission could halve suspension, Portugal sets hearing date

Cristiano Ronaldo faces a disciplinary decision after leaving Portugal's training camp; the Portuguese Football Federation will hold a hearing on 9 October 2026, and his public admission could halve a potential one‑month suspension and €510 fine. Lawyer Goncalo Almeida says the case falls under Article 160, which mandates a sanction of one to six months.

Coach clash leads to departure

The 41‑year‑old left the squad after a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus over his expected playing time and the handling of their conversations. Ronaldo later apologised to his teammates, supporters and the Portuguese public, saying his actions should have consequences.

Lawyer Goncalo Almeida, speaking to the newspaper A Bola, says the case falls under Article 160 of the Portuguese Football Federation’s Disciplinary Code. That article mandates a suspension of one to six months and a fine for any professional who abandons national‑team duties without justification. Almeida added that Ronaldo is already serving an automatic precautionary suspension.

The disciplinary council can initiate proceedings without a formal complaint because the facts are already public, the lawyer explained. The FPF’s Disciplinary Committee is scheduled to meet on Friday, 9 October 2026, according to the newspaper Record. Any time already spent under the automatic suspension is expected to count toward the final sanction, meaning a swift decision will clarify Ronaldo’s availability for Portugal’s next international window.

Almeida believes the process will move at exceptional speed. “Then there are proceedings that the Federation’s Disciplinary Council will begin, and Cristiano will be notified, in respect of the principle of due legal process, to give his opinion, and after that we will take a decision which I believe will be very swift,” he said.

Legal framework could halve penalty

Ronaldo’s public admission may halve any sanction under Article 244, which allows reductions when a player makes a complete and unconditional admission of the facts. Almeida says the captain’s statement meets that threshold, meaning the minimum one‑month suspension could be reduced to fifteen days and the €510 fine to €255.

In his statement, Ronaldo acknowledged that his role as Portugal captain could be an aggravating factor and pledged to accept any punishment. “The consequence of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I understand that the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor,” he declared.

Almeida also highlighted mitigating circumstances that could work in Ronaldo’s favour, including his lack of a recent disciplinary record and more than twenty years of service to the national side. The regulations permit the council to consider previous conduct, contributions to football and sporting merit when determining the final sanction.
