Ronald Araujo May Miss Uruguay's World Cup Opener
Ronald Araujo may miss Uruguay's opening World Cup match against Saudi Arabia due to a minor fitness issue and illness. The 27-year-old Barcelona defender is dealing with a slight muscle strain and flu symptoms.
Araujo did not train with the Uruguay squad in their final session before traveling to the United States. Uruguay have begun preventive treatment for the strain. Flu symptoms, including fever, have slowed his progress.
Guillermo Varela is set to start in Marcelo Bielsa's lineup for the opening match. Araujo could be used as a substitute if he remains unavailable.
Araujo is expected to be fully fit for Uruguay's second match against Cape Verde on June 22. He is also targeted for the group match against Spain on June 27, a game that could decide the Group H leader.
