Rome's Comune accelerates Flaminio plan, Lazio eyes faster renovation

Rome’s Comune is pushing the Flaminio stadium overhaul forward while Lazio must still reshape its redesign to satisfy heritage watchdogs – a race between municipal speed and architectural compliance.

Onorato unveils upcoming changes

Two days ago Alessandro Onorato, the assessor of Sport for the Comune, announced on his social channels that “super novità” are expected by the end of the month following the conclusion of the preliminary service conference.

Council timeline and approvals

The daily Repubblica-Roma reported that the capital (Capitale) intends to examine the public‑interest resolution on Lazio’s renovation in early September, with the council slated to vote on the same text between the end of September and early October.

Once the public‑interest decree is secured, Lazio must submit a definitive Progetto to the competent offices, updating it to meet the prescriptions issued by the Superintendency during the Conferenza dei servizi preliminare.

Technical hurdles and future schedule

The Superintendency’s key demands – a canopy that must remain untouched and a re‑thinking of the outer ring that was to cover the original Flaminio structure – are described by city technicians as surmountable, but they will dictate whether the new project is finally approved or irrevocably rejected after the decisive Conferenza dei servizi.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri is monitoring the dossier personally and has said he will give the final go‑ahead only if the Superintendency’s observations on stadium protection and the mobility studies receive a positive response.

Rumours suggest the revised design will accommodate 43,000 spectators, fewer than the initial scheme. After municipal approval, Lazio faces at least one year for a Technical and Economic Feasibility Study and another year for the final service conference, not counting possible appeals that have previously delayed projects such as Pietralata. If all proceeds smoothly, construction could begin between the end of 2028 and the start of 2029.
